Tales from the loved ones left behind.

“Were.. you with Trent last night?”, Sam asked shakily over the phone.

“Huh? No, I haven’t seen him in a while. What’s wrong?”, I answered.

“I don’t know, I can’t… I can’t, reach him since last night. I think… I think Trent jumped off the building. I’m going over to his place to find out now.”, Sam burst out.

“WHAT? I will call and check with other friends now.”, my heart pumped frantically as I hung up the phone.

I arrived at the wake, dressed in white, eyes puffy from crying and faces blank — still in disbelief and shock. Fingers intertwined with my best friend, Agnes, leaning on her for strength as we sauntered over to Trent‘s parents to give our respects.

Trent’s parents stood in the corner, frail-looking, leaning on each other as they stood in shock, pale, despair, and keeping what was left of themselves together as they greeted the guests at the wake.

“Why you idiot, why?”, I cried as I peered into the glass cover to see my friend for the last time. Lying inside, was a face I almost couldn’t recognise. Drained of life and blood, thick skin makeup was painted all over Trent‘s face, to cover up the plasters that held the fractured pieces of the skull together.
